Wireless multi-sensor monitor for logging of real-time biometric data from smart implants

Technologies

Digi International ConnectCore™ 9C, Blackfin DSP, Xilinx FPGA, Power-Over-Ethernet, Zarlink Radio modules, MSP430 processor

The system comprised a group of short-range smart transceiver/antenna modules connected to a communications controller. The transceiver/antenna modules are arranged to accommodate mobility of the smart implants. The communications controller connects to a Data Collection PC. The Data Collection PC can accommodate several communications controllers. Proprietary TDMA protocol development to accommodate exchange of information from multiple implants. The type and level of detail of the information is dynamic. The objectives of this proprietary protocol were to minimize power consumption (of the system as well as the implants) and to maximize system data throughput.

Communications Controller implemented on a proprietary multiprocessor environment incorporating:

  • Digi International ConnectCore™ 9C (ARM, Ethernet, NetOS) - responsible for communication with the data collection PC.
  • Blackfin DSP (proprietary OS) - A Digital Signal Processor dedicated to real-time decompression, normalization and calibration of the data received from the implants.
  • Xilinx FPGA implementing multiple high-speed serial interfaces with the smart transceiver/antenna modules. Also performed low-level signal analysis and selection.
  • Power-Over-Ethernet (POE) - the Communications Controller was powered from a POE. The Communications controller also supplied power to the smart transceiver/antenna modules connected to it.
